Overview

New! Post your messages about the Cox family at the Jesse Cox Heritage Message Board.

Jesse Cox was born about 1792 in what is now Ashe County, North Carolina. Nothing is known about Jesse parents, with the possible exception that his mother died when he was born. (Joshua Cox of Ashe County is a primary candidate to be Jesse's father.) On May 13, 1812 Jesse Cox acquired land on Bear Creek upon the consent of one David Earnest, implying he was still a minor. A farmer in Ashe County, Jesse enlisted in the War of 1812 on August 11, 1814 at Jefferson and served until his discharge on April 6, 1815 at Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Shortly after that, on July 27, 1815 he married his wife, Thursey (or Thursa) Harper in Wilkes County. He and his wife are found in the Ashe County, North Carolina censuses of 1820 through 1860 where they raised their family. By 1870 they were living in Russell County, Virginia. According to an 1871 pension application he lived 12 miles east of Lebanon. In the 1880 census Jesse was a widower living with his son Wilson in Russell County. Jesse was about 92 years old when he died on January 4, 1884.
