In 1946 the War Department published an Honor List of dead and missing in World War II for Army and Army Air Forces personnel. This lists were issued by county within state. The data contained here is taken from that list. The list is found in the Modern Military Records of the National Archives, control number NWCTM-407-WWIICASARMY-IA.

Where possible, grave marker information has been included from the Story County Grave Marker Inscription publications published by the Iowa Genealogical Society. No attempt was made to include the all information on the marker, nor any nearby markers of relatives. • Army Serial Number
• Grade. Sometimes called rank.
• Casualty Type
  • Finding of death. Individuals determined to be dead under Public Law 490.
  • Died of injuries. Those who suffered fatal battle injuries as opposed to wounds, in combat or combat areas, and died in a line-of-duty status.
  • Died of wounds. Those who were wounded and later died.
  • Killed in action. An individual who was killed in action, whether at the front or by enemy action in the rear areas, or if a prisoner of war, whether by air bombardment of his prison camp or by being shot while escaping.
  • Died, non-battle. Other line-of-duty deaths, such as from sickenss, homicide, suicide or accidents outside combat areas (including training and maneuver deaths).

• Cemetery. This is where a marker is found. Burial may or may not have been at the cemetery.
